April 2007 Opening Prayer

by: Rev. Francis R. Lonteen

Blessed are the merciful, because they will obtain mercy. Blessed are those who are considerate to the needy and the poor. Blessed are those who labor in the vineyard of the inner city. Pope John Paul II encouraged us to take care of the poor, to share our bread with the hungry and to give shelter to the needy and the homeless. Pope Benedict XVI in his encyclical, “God is Love” echoes these sentiments.

And so, we pray: Lord God, as we celebrate the light of Easter during this octave, and as we approach Divine Mercy Sunday, help us to be mindful of the mercy that you have shown to us by your Son’s death and resurrection. Let us be encouraged to show mercy to the persons we encounter each day. Heavenly Father, let us be aware of your generosity as we share our bounty with those who are less fortunate.

Let us be the light of Christ that shines in our world and destroys the darkness that exists in our fears and disappointments. And may we radiate the love of Christ from moment-to-moment and for our lifetime. O Lord, pour out your love and grace on us so that we can recognize you in all who we meet, especially in the poor of our world. We ask this, as always, in the name of Jesus our Lord. Amen.

April 2007 Closing Prayer

by: Zoe Speas

Heavenly Father, we thank you for this time of community and friendship, and for the opportunity to learn and grow in our faith in you by understanding our relationships with one another, strangers and neighbors alike.

It is through your calling that we are able to make choices in life, which influence what effect we have on the world. Bless Reverend Joseph McNulty and all those who have answered their calling to work in the inner city. Help us listen to your voice and to trust you even when those choices seem most difficult and uncertain. Give us the peace of mind that comes with knowing that you are always watching over us.

We praise your unlimited mercy and patients with us, and remain in awe of your glory and power. We do not seek to understand your ways, but look for comfort in the security of your guiding hand.

In Your Name we pray, Amen.
